Hammock Bassinet

The Hammock Bassinet
is new baby sleeping option, adapted from South East Asia. The baby cocoon or hammock style bassinet is a unique baby bed to promote sound sleep through comfortable suspended design and gentle, natural motion.

A hammock bassinet may be a solution for a fussy baby, a baby with reflux(GER), or colic. I know from my experience with one of my triplets, the best place other than on me in a baby holder, that she could sleep was her baby swing. This was not a viable option for the whole night. A hammock bassinet is a great option for a baby that needs that gentle motion and secure sleep environment, especially for preemies!

Here are some of the pros of a hammock bassinet, that manufacturers define:

Hammock Bassinets:
May Helps Alleviate Flathead

Cribs, bassinets, and Moses Baskets have a hard flat surface. Since babies sleep on their backs, on flat hard surfaces, they end up with flat, bald spot heads. Most South East Asian and East Asian countries sleep their babies on their backs as well, yet their babies are not prone to little flat heads because their babies sleep in suspended, hammock style beds.

Provide a warm swaddled cocoon

Babies need to be cuddled and swaddled, prefering to sleep snuggled up against Mom or Dad. This is not always an option for day and nights. When it is time to lay your sleeping baby down, a gentle, snuggly hammock bed keep baby cozy and comfortable throughout the night. The hammock bassinets are designed with breathable fabrics that allow temperature control in both warm and cold seasons.

Keeps your Baby Close to You

A Hammock bassinet fits easily in any room of the house. It can be moved to wherever you are to keep your baby close.

Provide a Safe Environment

All currently available hammock bassinet manufacturers should specify their product has been thoroughly tested to both national and international standards by the world’s leading testing agencies. Verify their safety by going to the Juvenile Product Manufacturers Association (JPMA) website. Individual studies that vary per product do indicate that a hammock style bassinet offers a greater level of baby comfort and and less irritability in the hospital setting.

The hammock style baby bed encourages back sleeping by preventing baby from rolling over.

Here are some currently available models of a hammock style bassinet:

This style of baby bed is not new to most of the world, but is new to those us used to the traditional hard surface baby bassinets and cribs. This is definitely a great alternative to the traditional bassinet. I would have loved to have this option with my babies! This would have been a life saver for my colicky baby and my baby with reflux. A well rested parent is always a better parent. A well-rested baby is a happier baby!

How To Assemble Eddie Bauer Cherry Bassinet Video

Assembly of the Eddie Bauer Wood Baby Bassinet

I found this very funny and accurate video showing how a Dad-to-be and and a Grandpa-to-be follow the directions and successfully assemble a baby bassinet. The video is titled, "Building the Baby Bassinet".

Anyone who has ever had to assemble baby furniture, kids furniture or toys can completely relate to this!

The bassinet they assembled is very cool too. It is the Eddie Bauer (Safety 1st Wood rocking bassinet:

The bassinet, as you can see from the video, is real wood with a convenient storage shelf, and a sturdy metal frame. The bassinet also features soothing music. It plays 5 songs with volume control and automatic shutoff after 15 minutes.

The only drawback to this nice piece is it is not self-rocking! Of course, in the middle of the night, when the bassinet is next to your bedside, you lazily stretch out your arm and could probably rock it while you sleep.

The bedding should be ironed or steamed prior to assembly since ti is hard to remove once the bassinet is assembled. ( The mattress pad sheet is easy to remove for washing) The bassinet can also be moved easliy. It rolls nicely on locking casters.

This bassinet is also available in a Natural finish. You can find both the cherry and natural finish bassinets at reasonable prices on eBay:

Fisher Price Zen Collection Cherry Gliding Bassinet

Fisher Price Zen Collection Gliding Bassinet

This is a cool looking bassinet! If you are looking for something modern and different, this is it! The only problem with this bassinet is the price tag! For the short amount of time that a baby uses a bassinet, a price tag of over $219 is excessive for the average family.

At first glance, it looks like a model sailboat!

Fisher Price is introducing the Zen collection, available starting May 12, 2008. The Zen Gliding Bassinet (or Bassinette) features a gliding motion that originates from Fisher Price Soothing Motions glider. The gliding motion is controlled by a variable speed control knob, allowing you to customize the motion to your baby's comfort. This soothing motion does require 4 D batteries. Since this item is new, hopefully Fisher Price has improved their technology so you don't have to change the batteries frequently!

The bassinet has a rich contemporary look with wood accents, and a sturdy metal frame made from rectangular tubing. The premium bedding and storage area underneath as well as a sheer canopy are in serene earth tones of ecru, beige, and a graceful leaf print. Please note that the bassinet sleeping area is bedding supported by the rectangular tubing. There is no molded bassinet basin.

A pretty bow adorns the end of the canopy stay and a large tray area below gives mom an additional place for baby items. For mobility, there are casters to allow the bassinet to be moved from room to room.

A nice selection of sounds to sooth are also provided, including 16 songs, and multiple sound effects that calm and soothe baby.

Don't you wish you had a bed like this?

This bassinet is currently only available for pre-orders. It is available on Amazon and by one other amazon merchant, "Well to do Baby" That is quite a fitting name for a store featuring this bassinet!

Pricing ranges from $219.99 to $280.00. The Zen collection from Fisher Price is the company's product offering exclusively for independent, specialty retailers.

Burlington Basket Bassinet Pink or Blue Review

Burlington Basket Bassinet

The Burlington Basket Rocking Cradle bassinet is a gorgeous classic bassinet.

The bassinet frame is imported but the bassinet itself is made in the US in Burlington, Iowa.

The style is based on the old fashioned wicker bassinets but is now made safer with no loose pieces like the bassinets of old. The bassinet is JMPA certified fiberboard with a sturdy plastic frame. At first glance, looks can be deceiving because the bassinet seems to lightweight. Rest assured for you and your baby this bassinet is made with the highest quality standards and meets or exceeds all JMPA and government safety standards.

The price is right. $40-$55 based on the choice of bedding. The best selling model is 252W with the interchangeable pink and blue gingham ribbons and the matching pink and blue basket liners for the real willow baskets.

For the Antique Toile look with toile bedding and woven wood baskets the price is higher in the $59-$70 range.

Here is the Victorian Toile Bassinet from my store:

Victorian Tolie Bassinet

Other bedding options now include a full length triple tier eyelet bedding set, full length triple ruffle white with the interchangeable ribbons in pink, blue , and sage. The full length bedding comes in a classic ecru or cream triple ruffle waffle fabric.

The bedding is available in pink, sage or blue gingham as well.

The bassinet comes with casters and easily converts from rocking cradle to rolling bassinet. Should you ever have any problems, this item has a full MFR warranty from Burlington Basket.

There had been some complains I have read online regarding the mattress, and I was horrified that many new parents think a baby should have a cushy fluffy bed. The complaints I have read on online reviews and pareting forums are that mattress is not very thick. Many think they solved that problem by either using an extra pillow or some extra blankets.

YIKES!!! NO NO NO! No blankets, no extra padding, please for the safety of the baby. the mattress is by safety regulations only supposed to be less than 3/4'" thick and must be firm.

The pad should only be fitted with a standard bassinet sheet. No blankets, no pillows! That is a suffication hazard.

Assmebly for this bassinet is quick and easy, less than 15 minutes and it is ready to go.

Overall, this is an inexpensive and beautiful solution for keeping your baby close in those first few months.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions! I have proudly been an authorized
Burlington Basket Retailer since 2004, and I am also a customer! I used the 252W model with my 4th baby. I also use Burlinton Basket willow hampers, and baskets for storage in every room of my home, as well as give them as gifts!

Baby Gear Shopping List

Baby Gear Shopping List

Our Triplets in their Graco Snugride Infant Carseats

We tried alot of baby gear and toys with our triplets. When our 4th baby came along 2 yrs later, we knew what worked and only needed a bare minimum of the items we had for our triplets.

Here is a great starting list provided by 4women.gov:

Baby Shopping List

For parents to be, walking into a huge baby superstore is both fun and overwhelming. From my experience with my 4 kids, alot of the baby gear will end up just taking up space, frustrating you and your baby!

Here is my survival list of baby gear we used with our triplets. I am not listing the essentials like layette, grooming, and nursery decor. This is just the short list for baby gear.

1. Breast Pump - if you plan to breastfeed, I strongly recommend a hospital grade breast pump. This is an necessity for multiples. We rented ours and insurance covered it. You do not need to purchase one. If you do decide to purchase, go with the leader, Medela.

2. Carseat

An infant carseat is a necessity and at the top of the list. We used the Graco Snugride Infant Carseat . We actually gave ours away after the triplets outgrew them. Then, when I was pregnant with baby #4, I immediately went back got another Snugride. It worked for us! It is safe, sturdy, and inexpensive. Everyone wants the best for their baby. Wanting the best for your child does not mean you have to spend alot of money for an infant carseat that you will only use for the first few months.

Your baby will be in the next size up carseat for a very long time. Spend the money on the convertible forward facing carseat later.

3.Stroller

You don't need a travel system (car seat that fits into a stroller) for a newborn. You'll spend a lot of money for an oversized and sometimes cumbersome stroller you may rarely use. You must have seen Moms struggling with getting a stroller in or out the back of a minivan at the grocery store. They usually don't look happy, do they?

Keep it simple. a basic stroller is better. Most basic strollers will also carry an infant carseat, affectionately referred to as "the bucket" Our singleton stroller was an inexpensive and surprisingly sturdy Graco stroller. It folded and unfolded quickly, and was lightweight. We used that stroller for all the kids. It lasted 6 years!

In the beginning, we figured we needed the cadillac of strollers for our triplets. We purchased the Peg Perrigo triplet stroller... sigh what a waste of money! Big and heavy! I can't tell you how many times I pinched my fingers getting the seats to fold up or down. Yes, it was the only way I could get out of the house with triplets, by myself. I also got a heck of a workout!

I did enjoy going for walks with the babies in the triplet stroller. However, it was next to impossible to travel with. I used a Double Stroller, baby sling, and shopping cart for shopping alone. (push one pull the other). This was NOT fun but better than a triplet stroller!

I did get out with the help of my Mom, Husband and friends. We used our before mentioned Graco single stroller, and a Kolkraft doule stroller. Quick and easy! (If you really want a stroller for triplets or more, see roundabouts for multiples).

For more than one baby, try a simple Double Stroller. I preferred side by side for easier folding. Try it out in the store. Fold it and unfold it several times. Pick it up with one hand. Your stroller needs to be lightweight, sturdy, portable.

4. Bassinet or Moses basket

For more information on selecting a bassinet or Moses basket, see my Bassinet Buying Guide.

The goal with a bassinet is to keep your baby safe, close to you, and allow you to get much needed sleeping in the first few months of your baby's life. A bassinet or Moses basket is a charming and convenient first bed for your baby when you are home during the day, or while traveling.

We only used our bassinet with our 4th baby, not our triplets, and only during the day. We did co-sleep with all of our babies. However, some nights having the baby in the bassinet next to me worked best. During the day, I needed to keep her very close to me since I had triplet 2 yr olds running around! I used a bassinet but had to keep it barricaded to keep the baby safe.

Another option is an all in one playard bassinet combination. Graco takes the leads on these too. I recommend Graco pack and play, no bells and whistles.

5. Bouncer or Bouncy Seat

An inexpensive bouncy seat with vibration is a great lightweight baby holder. A Bouncy seat keeps baby with you, allowing them to be a part of the family. It is portable, and works great for naps too!

The simpler ones work best. The baby papasans, fancy toy bars, and mobiles are nice but not necessary at all. The plain ol' bouncy seat works best. Your baby bouncy seat or bouncer should not cost more than $30. You are looking for a sturdy metal/wire frame ( not plastic) with sturdy fabric cover that is removeable for washing, and a small, vibration device. Get couple and keep one at Grandma's house.

Baby Bouncer Seat

I also liked the Fisher-Price Infant-To-Toddler Rocker. I gave this as a gift to many of my friends after using it with our 4th baby. This chair is really inexpensive and works great. Expect to pay no more than $35.00 for this item.

One of the many benefits of this chair was allowing the baby to sit upright for sleeping at night when she was congested. She also spent lots of quality time hanging out in her rocker in the bathroom while I was potty training the triplets! When she wasn't in her chair, one of her siblings would use it for watching TV or just relaxing.

6. Baby Swing

A swing is invaluable for some babies for several reasons. However, a baby swing does not work for everyone. Some babies do not respond well to the motion. For this reason, purchase an inexpensive one and keep the receipt! I do not recommend borrowing one if the previous owner has unassembled it. These things do not always go together well, even the expensive ones!

The swing really soothed our colicky baby, helped her fall asleep, and establish a daily nap schedule. We spent alot of time wearing our baby "C" in the slings, as well. However, with triplets, the other babies needed us too, and we needed a break, The swing saved us. The swing also worked great for our baby "A". She had reflux. After each feeding we had to try to keep her upright. We used the swing (in the off position) to keep her comfortable and upright for 20 minutes after each feeding.

Of course holding your baby is want she wants most of the time. (No you can't spoil a baby by holding them too much!) Sometimes you do need to restrain your little one while you do something like eat or go to the bathroom! A baby swing works very well for short durations.

Many swings have a mobile or some other point of interest attached. They can provide your baby with distraction and help her begin learning to focus, follow and reach for objects, while relaxing in the swing. However, these embellishments add to the price tag, and are not necessary. We found attaching links with toys to the swing sides worked just as well. Light patterns and shadows on the wall are really what kept the baby's attention best.

A swing will never substitute for human contact. When parents are tired, sometimes it is easy to start relying on the swing too much. I recommend you use it but sparingly.

Other things to check with your swing:

  • Ensure it has a removable seat cover

  • Comfortable seat, reclining

  • Read reviews regarding Good battery life - we went about 1.5 months between changes, using it daily

  • Low motor sound bring batteries and test the displays!

  • Make sure you have the space for it. some fancy all in one have a huge footprint. This item will dominate in any room of your house!

  • Ensure the low setting should be low. Most swings go too fast for newborns. Try it out on a doll in the store.

  • Visit a website that has trustworthy customer reviews like Amazon.com Baby Swing

My recommendation for a great new swing that coverts to my other favorite item, the child rocker, is the Fisher-Price Smart Stages 3-in-1 Rocker Swing

This swing has received great reviews. You can easily convert it from swing to rocker

Fisher-Price Smart Stages 3-in-1 Rocker Swing in the swing mode

Fisher-Price Smart Stages 3-in-1 Rocker Swing in the rocker mode

7. Baby Sling

A goog easy-to-use baby sling can be a sanity saver. My favorite and the one recommended by the La Leche League (LLL) is the Over The Shoulder Baby Holder. ( See me with my baby in the left column, and learn more about the OTSBH) Avoid the fancy slings with long pieces of fabric you wrap in a million different ways and end up getting tangled up in it!

Wear your baby as much as you can, you will not regret it. I was visiting a friend who has a new baby. She expressed the same new Mom exasperation of how do I get him to sleep? He always wants to be held. My answer, "then hold him". The baby tells you what he needs. It is ok to hold your baby. You will not spoil him. You will enjoy wearing him even more! Its hands free holding!

8.Playard

A playard or Pack n Playwith built in bassinet is perfect for travel or at home use in any room of your house.

Graco Pack n Play are the market leader and they work great! The simple ones work best. All the bells and whistles with super mobiles, etc don't make a cranky baby less cranky. They just require more maintenance and cost more. A Pack n Play also makes a great changing table.

If you are paying over $100 for a playard or Pack n Play, you are paying too much. The models between $50-$100 work just fine and have the bassinet, changing table options too. Over $100 you are paying for toys. The more expensive Pack n Plays are not better, just fancier.

9. A Good Recliner!

A glider or rocking chair... neither worked for us. We purchased a comfy rocking recliner chair. Our recliner saved our backs and mental health. The chair is still going and has earned a place of honor in our family room. I can pile all 4 kids on it with me for story time. Most gliders and rocking chairs are not that comfortable, especially in the middle of the night.

10. Crib Mobile
Now a crib mobile may seem frivilous on a must have baby gear list. I included this item because we used all of ours alot!

I love the look of a completely coordinated nursery. However, the matching crib mobile that coordinate with most nursery bedding and decor, don't always catch a babies attention, especially the pastel ones. We tried 6 different crib mobiles from fancy ones with the light shows and remote control(They are too heavy!) to the simple wind up kind. The only good feature with our fancier crib mobiles was the remote control.

The best one and the one we ended up using the most (got the same one for each of the triplets, and then again for baby #4) was a simple wind up model with bright, primary colored bugs. The bugs were mutli-patterned too. We kept the bugs in their memory boxes. You should not have to spend more than $35 for a crib mobile. Here is a cute baby crib mobile by Small Fry Designs: Bugs, Bugs, Bugs Mobile

It's not the same one we had but it is along the same idea. It has bright colors and patterns.

11. Diaper Disposal

This does not mean a fancy Diaper Genie - not really necessary at all! I would not recommend those diaper disposal systems, and their expensive refill bags, at all! Add a few nice trash bins with lids to your baby registry instead of a fancy (and ugly) diaper disposal system.

A good and stylish trash can with lid works great. Empty frequently and odor will not be a problem.

12. Clothes hamper or a laundry basket in every room
You will be doing lots of laundry, and the dirty piles will quickly form in every room of the house. There is nothing more depressing when you are sleep deprived and stuck inside with a newborn baby or babies, then piles of dirty laundry.

Get a few nice hampers with quick removeable liners (and extra liners) or just use some colorful laundry baskets. Oh, keep a non-toxic spray bottle of stain cleaner in the laundry baske too! (Try Sun and Earth all purpose cleaner)

13.Changing Station

This does not necessarily mean a changing table. A changing station can be a changing table or a bureau with changing pad or a pack n play with a build in changing area, or a changing pad on the floor. The most important feature is the Changing Pad. Get a few!

Some parents simply change their baby on the floor of the baby's room (on a

waterproof changing pad), with diapering supplies stowed in a nearby basket. I didn't care for floor changes becuase they hurt your back. However, as the babies got bigger and more wiggly, this method worked best.

Some parents simply buy a changing pad and place it on top of a dresser. You can store diapers and wipes in the top drawer. We converted our dresser to a changing station for our triplets. Make sure that you buy a thick changing pad and that your dresser is at a comfortable height for you. Also ensure you can anchor the pad so it doesn't move around.

If you have the the space, and would like to spend the cash, you have your choice of well-designed, practical, and attractive changing tables. Some double as attractive high low dressers. Others can convert into student desks.

Now as your baby gets through the first few months, you should consider the following additions to your baby gear. By this time, e had outgrown his bassinet and is also ready for some variety in his diet!

14.Portable feeding seat instead of a high chair.

We had 3 highchairs with the triplets:

Triplets trying to get Cheerios

Cute picture, huh? Trying cleaning those highchairs over, and over, and over again! The happiest day of my life was kicking those highchairs to curb!

We never used one for our 4th baby! We got the Safety First Reclining Booster Seat

Well worth it. A reclining booster seat saves space and saves precious time cleaning the highchair. This also travels well, and your baby gets to sit at the big table right away. What better way to teach a baby to eat solids than to have him with you at the table?

Reclining Booster Seat

15. Convertable Crib

Buy a nice convertible crib — you'll get so much more use out of it! We converted our triplets' cribs to toddler daybeds. Your cribs then were passed on to another triplet family. We had to purchase a 4th crib with our 4th baby since the triplets were still in their cribs.

We also had a few other well loved and used items like our boppy pillow ( we had 3 of those), crib tents, and our all time favorite SUPERYARD playyard! Stay tuned for those reviews! Please feel free to comment on my list and add your favorites too, especially parents of multiples.

Badger Basket Hooded Moses Basket Review

Badger Basket Hooded Moses Basket Review

The Badger Basket Hooded Moses Basket is a best buy. This is one baby item that is beautiful, practical, reusable, and affordable!

The hooded moses basket is perfect for keeping your baby close at home or when visiting friends. The basket gives your infant a comfy and cozy cradle with a removeable hood.

When your baby outgrows the Moses basket, you can use it to store stuffed animals, as bed for dolls or small pets. Remove the hood, and use it to store kids books and toys. The Moses basket looks great in any room of the house. This basket is certainly a nice way to gather kids stuff.

The hooded moses basket has a woven rattan hood to provide shade for your baby. The hood is removable, yet attaches very securely with the velcro. There is no fear of it falling off.

The Badger Basket hooded moses basket is a complete set. The basket includes a mattress pad, white sheet and soft bumper/liner made with a choice of fabrics:

  • Thick waffle fabric trimmed with white satin piping

  • Nice gingham fabric

  • Luxurious solid color with raised furry dots fabric, trimmed in white satin

The fabric colors are pink, blue, sage green, white or ecru. A soft polyester fill pads the poly/cotton bumper for cushiony comfort. The liner is removable and can be machine-washed and tumbled dry.

The basket and hood are made of woven rattan with sturdy handles that are braided and woven into the basket for more strength. The baskets are available in 2 finishes: Natural and a deep honey. The only complaint I have found on the honey finish is that it is a little more reddish than the stock photos display.

The basket can only be used until your baby weighs approximately 15 pounds, or until your baby can push up or roll over unassisted. Even though all moses baksets come with handles, you cannot carry the baby around in it. No manufacturer recommends this. Always place your moses basket on a firm, flat surface, away from a fireplace, woodstove, or any open flames like a firepit or campfire.

The Badger Basket hooded moses basket is just the right size: not too big not too small. The Moses bakset measures approximately 30.5"L x 17"W x 18"H. the basket is 6" deep in the middle. Baby will feel snug and safe.

This moses basket has a great price but don't be deceived! This basket is sturdy and durable. The mattress pad is sturdier than most moses basket pads, and fits the basket well with no gaps.

This is a great choice for your baby! I read one review on this basket that said they used this basket as an Easter basket gift for their newborn grandchild. That got me thinking. I am sick of plush, plastic, and beach pail Easter baskets we have accumulated with our 4 kids for Easter. I am going to give a hooded moses basket to each of my 3 girls for this Easter. This will fit their American Girl dolls, and favorite animals beautifully! Worth the price to get that stuff off the floor!

The hooded Moses basket makes a wonderful baby shower gift! Fill it with baby necessities and a couple of Mommy gifts too! What a nice presentation.
